Hi {{ first name | reader }}!
Not sure if you know this, but I run a studio called The Content Studio of Westport in Westport, CT where we produce video podcasts, coach executives on public speaking, build content plans for businesses, and just generally have a great time doing so.
Last week, I was coaching a client on her speaking reel. She knows her stuff. Deep expertise. Great energy in person.
Here are 5 simple on-camera fixes that instantly level up how confident and credible you sound - whether you’re recording a reel, a podcast, or a solo episode.
1️⃣ Slow down more than feels comfortable
Almost everyone speaks too fast on camera. Not because they’re nervous, but because they’re thinking ahead.
Here’s the trick:
Pause at the end of every sentence.
Not a beat. A full breath.
It feels long. It looks confident.
2️⃣ Don’t “perform” your expertise, explain it
The moment someone tries to sound impressive, the camera exposes it.
Instead of:
“I help clients optimize high-level strategic outcomes…”
Try:
“What this actually means is…”
3️⃣ Keep your hands visible (and intentional)
Hands jammed in pockets or flailing wildly both signal uncertainty.
Use your hands the way you do when you’re explaining something to a friend across the table.
Natural. Framed. Purposeful.
Confidence is physical.
4️⃣ Pick ONE person to talk to
Not your audience.
Not “the internet.”
One person.
I often tell clients:
“Imagine you’re explaining this to someone you like, who’s smart, but doesn’t know your world.”
Your tone instantly softens. Your message lands.
5️⃣ Stop chasing perfection, aim for presence
Your best takes are rarely the most polished ones.
They’re the ones where:
• Your shoulders drop
• Your voice settles
• You stop trying to get it “right”
Presence beats polish. Every time.
I always say this: you don’t need to become someone else on camera.
You just need to remove the friction between what’s in your head and what’s coming out of your mouth!
Thanks for being a subscriber, and have a wonderful week.
