THIS WEEK’S BRIEF
I’m changing how I use Instagram
I’ve been looking at my Instagram lately, and I had to ask myself a question.
If someone met me at an event, looked me up, and landed on my profile, would they understand what I actually do?
I’ve spent decades producing and hosting television, telling stories, and helping businesses communicate through video. But I’m not sure a quick look at my Instagram would tell you that.
So I’m changing it.
I generally haven’t used Instagram as a way to grow my business. The idea of constantly posting and chasing views has never appealed to me.
But I’ve started thinking about what Instagram can do.
It can show someone how you think. How you solve problems. What your work looks like. And it can do all of that in short, easy-to-digest pieces.
So again, I’m not rebuilding my Instagram to chase views. I’m building a portfolio of my work in bite-sized chunks, so when someone looks me up and lands on my page, they can quickly get a sense of what I do and how I might be able to help them.
And I think this could work for your business, too.
Think about how often you check someone out before reaching out. Maybe a colleague mentions a financial advisor, an attorney, or a consultant. You look at their website, then maybe LinkedIn or Instagram. You want to get a feel for them before you make contact.
Your potential clients may be doing the same thing.
So here’s something worth trying: look at your Instagram profile as if you’ve never met yourself before.
Within a few seconds, can you tell:
Who you help and what you do? Your bio should make that clear.
How you think? Share an answer to a question your clients ask, or explain how you approach a problem.
What your work looks like? Show a project, a story, or a glimpse of how you work.
What someone should do next? Make it easy to visit your website or get in touch.
You don’t have to do all of this at once. Start with one short video answering a question you hear from clients. Then look at your profile and ask whether someone who finds that video would understand how you can help.
I’m still working through my own changes, and I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
In the meantime, take a look at your profile. If the right person landed there today, what would they learn about you?
That’s a wrap for today. Have a wonderful week!
P.S. If you’re stuck on what to make, or how to actually get started with video to grow your business, my 30-Day Visibility Sprint gives us a month to work on that together. Here’s how we can work together.
