THIS WEEK’S BRIEF
Is that really what people think I do?
I sometimes get referred to as “the tech guy.” It drives me crazy. Not that there is anything wrong with being a tech person, but I’m probably the last person you should ask to fix your computer.
I totally understand where it comes from. There are cameras, microphones and wires. I’m the person standing next to them.
But I still have that little moment of, “Wait. Is that really what people think I do?”
Maybe you’ve had a version of this.
You’re the financial adviser who gets introduced as “the investment guy,” even though some of your most valuable work is helping someone think through a major life decision.
You’re the accountant people call at tax time, but you also help business owners understand why they’re profitable and still short on cash.
People recognize the most visible part of your job. The judgment behind it can be harder to see. That matters because it shapes when they think to call you, what they ask you to help with, and how they describe you to someone else.
So here’s a useful starting point for your next video:
Explain a decision you helped someone make, and why.
Choose something you’re allowed to discuss, without identifying the client. What did they initially think they needed? What did you notice? What questions did you ask? How did those questions change the direction?
For example, an accountant could explain why they encouraged a growing business to look at the timing of customer payments before taking on another loan.
Now someone watching can understand how that accountant approaches a problem. They’ve seen a little of the thinking they might otherwise encounter only after becoming a client.
You don’t need to squeeze your entire profession into one video. Pick one situation and walk us through it.
Have you ever been put in the wrong box professionally? Hit reply and tell me what people call you - and what they’re missing.
That’s all for now, have a wonderful week!
P.S. If you’re stuck on what to make, or how to actually get started with video to grow your business, my 30-Day Visibility Sprint gives us a month to work on that together. Here’s how we can work together.
